How to Keep Yourself and Others Safe
Buying and using your e‑bike or e‑scooter:
- Buy your e‑bike, e‑scooter, and any batteries from reputable shops.
- Do not buy cheap or unbranded chargers or batteries.
- Do not adapt or modify the battery or the bike/scooter.
- Only use the original charger that came with it.
- Register your e‑bike or e‑scooter with the manufacturer so you get safety updates or recall notices.
Storing your e‑bike or e‑scooter:
- Store your e‑bike or e‑scooter outside the building if possible.
- Do not store them in communal areas (hallways, stairwells, shared rooms).
- Do not block escape routes.
- Do not throw old or damaged batteries in household bins — ask your local council how to dispose of them safely.
Charging your battery safely:
- Charge in a safe, agreed place, never in communal areas.
- Plug the charger directly into the wall (not an extension lead).
- Check the battery and charger for damage before using.
- Let the battery cool before charging.
- Never cover the charger.
- Keep chargers away from anything that can catch fire.
- Do not charge while you are asleep.
- Unplug when fully charged.
- Make sure you have a working smoke alarm in the room where you charge.
Warning signs of a dangerous battery. Stop using the battery and call for help if you notice:
- Excess heat
- Bulging, swelling, cracks, leaking
- Hissing sounds
- Smoke (if you see smoke, evacuate and call 999 immediately)
Remember - If a lithium‑ion battery catches fire: Get out, stay out, and call 999.
