How to Keep Yourself and Others Safe

Buying and using your e‑bike or e‑scooter:

  • Buy your e‑bike, e‑scooter, and any batteries from reputable shops.
  • Do not buy cheap or unbranded chargers or batteries.
  • Do not adapt or modify the battery or the bike/scooter.
  • Only use the original charger that came with it.
  • Register your e‑bike or e‑scooter with the manufacturer so you get safety updates or recall notices.

Storing your e‑bike or e‑scooter:

  • Store your e‑bike or e‑scooter outside the building if possible.
  • Do not store them in communal areas (hallways, stairwells, shared rooms).
  • Do not block escape routes.
  • Do not throw old or damaged batteries in household bins — ask your local council how to dispose of them safely.

Charging your battery safely:

  • Charge in a safe, agreed place, never in communal areas.
  • Plug the charger directly into the wall (not an extension lead).
  • Check the battery and charger for damage before using.
  • Let the battery cool before charging.
  • Never cover the charger.
  • Keep chargers away from anything that can catch fire.
  • Do not charge while you are asleep.
  • Unplug when fully charged.
  • Make sure you have a working smoke alarm in the room where you charge.

Warning signs of a dangerous battery. Stop using the battery and call for help if you notice:

  • Excess heat
  • Bulging, swelling, cracks, leaking
  • Hissing sounds
  • Smoke (if you see smoke, evacuate and call 999 immediately)
